One more agitation

The past two days took me back to the first three and half decades, just wondering if there is any change in the DNA of India. The History of India is full of frictions. Before Independence (BI), the friction was with the invaders and after 1947 we have been struggling with ourselves. BI mainly the Moslems and English ruined India, AI we never needed them. All the times two sections, otherwise called brothers, fought with each other, each one was haunted and fully fuddled. Each shot at the public property. I have heard of Induchacha, the one who won over Morarji Desai, the then CM of Mumbai. Yes, it all started in Gujarat, post independence. That was the first modern satyagrah, dressed in the “physical friction”. The Gujarati society wanted the partition of the Mumbai Province based on the then accepted rule of division of India according to the language. The agitation was full of physique that is now seen mainly in Bollywood.

(Once I heard Shahbuddin Rathod. One of his characters elocuted about Gandhiji in his school assembly. Narrating the profession of Mr. Gandhi, he says, Gandhiji was a lawyer but his practice was not rewarding, he was hardly getting any case, so he started satyagrah, and surprisingly that business succeeded unrivaledly. Then what!!! He came to India and started Satyagraha in India too (મંડ્યા સત્યાગ્રહ કરવા). It seems that he not only stuck to satyagrah himself, but he saw to it that his country, if not the whole, then at least his province, must inherit the profession of satyagrah.)
If we look the fight for Independence, Satyagrah was the only possible and innovative weapon. But the AI, it had to prove itself to be the Weapon of Self Destruction (WSD). I wonder and also feel remorse, for Gandhiji did not claim the patent for satyagrah. Every developed civilization thinks that a Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) should not fall in the hand of a leader of a radical or a mentally under developed society. I think for the current Indian agitation form of satyagrah, is far more dangerous than WMD. Yes, WSD the LSD version of WMD. Gujarat is addicted to WSD. AI, we have seen many agitations, the first two were grand successful. First was Induchacha brand Mahagujarat Andolan and the Second was Manishi Jani brand Nav Nirman Andolan. I was a teenaged participant of Nav Nirnam Andolan. Until now, I was feeling a proud participant of a very palmy agitation. I belonged to Nadiad, Kakarkhad at that time. I was entering into my teens. I was fond of narrating the story how I witnessed the first Martyr, Kanu Parekh, at the Swaminarayan Temple at Nadiad.

On 25 August 2015, every inch of me felt ashamed that I am a part of this Gujarat. How did we change the motive to use the agitation? Are we really civilized? Are our demand justified? Is the WSD meant for such unjustified and unruly movement? Then I am thinking why is this happening? And I am saddened. I find the roots of such agitation in a wrong turning on the policy matters of the Indian Politicians.
I feel the gene of WSD was mutated by Government by giving the previous generation a regular dose of opium. In order to find the root of this we will have to digress a little.
Let us take a look at our education system. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is getting the admission into the courses of Higher Education. The population explosion in Higher Education is out of proportion. Why is it so? Is this the reason for the agitation? Let is examine.
The fall of Chimanbhai Government was the last successful agitation in Gujarat, and, to the best of my limited understanding, in India. Then after, in 1980 the anti-reservation agitation was crushed (politically). It was the time for the cunningly cleverest political party/ies to think. They thought, “Keep the youth busy.” They kept the youth busy. They opened the door to the Higher Education for all. The current debate is about the undeserving OBC candidate. We should introspect only to find that not more than 2 percent of students allowed to enter Higher Education are up to the mark. What are our benchmarks? Well, Ratta Lagao and Pass Ho Jao.

In first half of 80s the tuition fees were waived for girls till the end of postgraduation. On the other front, the marks were like buy one get three free. The culture of studying and confining to the notes given by the teacher is the synonym of Indian Education Methodology. Even after this one fails, there is a legal stepwise gracing system in our education system. Some years ago, I heard that the government increased the percentage of the successful candidates of Higher Secondary by more than 40 percent in one night by gracing the marks!!! Was it a rumor or a fact?

The over population in Higher Education was the outcome of the brain of those clever politicians who wanted to keep the youth busy. If one fails in some courses, it is impossible to keep him/her engaged in the programme. The remedy was the gracing, generous gracing, over generous gracing. All this kept a couple of generation on the dose of opium.
This is how the gene of WSD was made silent in a couple of generation and now it has been dominating again. The clever politicians would not have missed to realize that the fruits could be this. But they might be short sighted. While thinking in early 80s, they did not care to bother about the venomous fruits in 2015.

શિક્ષણમાં પ્રયોગો.

ભારતીય શિક્ષણ સંસ્થાઓ ગુરુકુલના રૂપમાં જુદા જુદા ઋષિઓને ત્યાં ચાલતી અને સમર્થ શિક્ષકો સમાજમાં ગુરુ તરીકેનું સ્થાન પામાતા. શિક્ષક સમાજનું ઘડતર કરતો. સાથે રાજ્ય વ્યવસ્થાથી પર રહીને પણ રાજ્ય વ્યવસ્થાને જરૂર હોય ત્યારે સલાહ સૂચન આપતો. કાળક્રમે ગુરુકુલ વિશ્વવિદ્યાલયોમાં ફેરવાયાં. નાલંદા વિશ્વવિદ્યાલય તેનુ અપ્રતિમ ઉદાહરણ છે. એક વિદ્યાપીઠમાં અનેક શિક્ષકો વિદ્યાર્થીઓનું અને તે દ્વારા પરોક્ષ રીતે સમાજનું ઘડતર કરતા. કાળક્રમે વિદ્યાપીઠો દ્વારા શિક્ષણની પદ્ધતિ અન્ય દેશોમાં પાંગરી.
આધુનિક સમયમાં શિક્ષણ ઉપર નવતર પ્રયોગો સતત ચાલતા રહ્યા છે; ક્યારેક વાર્ષિક તો ક્યારેક દ્વિ-સત્ર પદ્ધતિ. પરંતુ વર્ગખંડોમાં શિક્ષણ આપવાની રીતમાં જવલ્લે જ કોઇક નાનો ફેરફાર થતો હશે! છેલ્લા પાંચ દાયકાથી પાટિયા ઉપર લખતો શિક્ષક અને તેમાંથી શબ્દતઃ નોંધપોથીમાં ટપકાવતો વિદ્યાર્થી આપણી શિક્ષણ પદ્ધતિની સ્થિર (static) પ્રણાલિકાનો ભાગ છે. કદાચ વિજ્ઞાનમાં પાટિયાનું સ્થાન કમ્પ્યુટરે લીધું હોય તેમ બને પણ વિદ્યાર્થીનો મૂળભૂત આધાર તો તેની નોંધપોથી જ રહ્યો છે. હવે તો શિક્ષકોના નામથી બનાવેલી નોંધપોથીઓ બજારમાં નકલ કેન્દ્રો પર તૈયાર વેચાય છે. પરીણામે વર્ષોવર્ષ નોંધપોથીમાં થતા નાના નાના ફેરફારો પણ અદ્રશ્ય થઇ ગયા છે! આ તમામના કારણે શિક્ષણ પ્રક્રિયાના કેન્દ્રમાં જ્ઞાનના બદલે માહિતી, અને તે પણ સ્થિર (static) માહિતી આપોઆપ ગોઠવાઇ ગઇ છે. આ માહિતીનુ પોટલું પરીક્ષા સુધી વેંઢારતો વિદ્યાર્થી પરીક્ષાના દિવસે હાશ! કહી હરખાય તેમાં સમાજને કે શિક્ષકને ખોટું લગાડવાનો રીવાજ આપણે ઊભો કરવો રહ્યો. શિક્ષણના કારખાનાંમાં તૈયાર થતો વિદ્યાર્થી જ્ઞાનના ફલક પર કોરો કટ રહી બહાર નીકળે તે આપણને પરવડે તેમ નથી.
બીજી તરફ સામાજીક અર્થવ્યવસ્થામાં થયેલાં આમૂલ ઢાંચાકીય પરિવર્તનોનાં કારણે બજાર ગ્રાહકલક્ષી બન્યું છે. ગ્રાહકને આકર્ષવા ઉત્પાદનની વિવિધતા અને નિત નવી સુવિધાઓ ઊભી કરવાનુ ઉત્પાદકો માટે અનિવાર્ય બન્યું છે. આ સંજોગોમાં ઉદ્યોગોમાં કામ કરતો કર્મચારી નવું જ્ઞાન પ્રાપ્ત કરી પ્રયોગશીલ ન બને તો ખાનગી ઉદ્યોગો તેને ફરજ મુક્ત કરતા જરાપણ અચકાતા નથી. છેલ્લા બે થી ત્રણ વર્ષમાં ટાટા કન્સલ્ટન્સી જેવી અગ્રણી કંપનીઓએ એક સાથે હજારોની સંખ્યામાં પોતાના તકનીકી કર્મચારીઓને તેમની બિનઆવડતનું કારણ આપીને ઘર ભેગા કરી દીધા છે. એકલ દોકલ કર્મચારીઓને છુટા કરવાની વાતો તો રોજ બરોજની ઘટના છે. અખબારોના કહેવા મુજબ ભારતીય ઉદ્યોગ જગતમાં માનવ સંસાધનની માંગ દિન પ્રતિદિન વધતી જાય છે, વળી સરકારના make in Indiaના અભિયાન સાથે આ માંગ હજુ પણ વધવાની છે. પરંતુ બીજી તરફ આવડતના અભાવે છુટા થતા કર્મચારીઓની સંખ્યા પણ વધતી જાય છે. આ પરિસ્થિતિ જોતાં આપણી શિક્ષણ પદ્ધતિ નોંધપોથીમાંથી બહાર નીકળે તે અનિવાર્ય છે. શિક્ષણની બીજી એક ખાસિયત એ હોવી જોઇએ કે તે વિદ્યાર્થીને શીખતાં શીખવે. આજના વિદ્યાર્થી તેના 15 થી 17 વર્ષનાં અભ્યાસ ગાળા દરમ્યાન ક્યાંય પણ શીખવાનું શીખતો નથી. તેને જાતે શીખવા માટે તૈયાર કરવામાં આવતો નથી. બદલાતા જતા સમાજની સાથે તેના રૂઢિ-રિવાજો અને રહન-સહન બદલાય છે. પણ વિદ્યાર્થીના ઘડતરની પ્રક્રિયા એની એજ રહે છે.

આ તમામ વાસ્તવિકતાઓ સાથે ઘણા તેજસ્વી વિદ્યાર્થીઓ આ જ પ્રણાલિકામાંથી પસાર થવા છતાં ઝળહળી ઉઠે છે. તેઓ પ્રયોગશીલ પણ હોય છે સ્વાવલંબી પણ હોય છે અને નવું શીખવાની વૃત્તિ તથા કાબેલિયત ધરાવતા હોય છે. આ પૈકીના ઘણા બધા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ અગમ્ય કારણસર (?) વિદેશ તરફ આકર્ષાઇને દેશ છોડીને જતા રહે છે પરીણામે દેશ બૌદ્ધિક નાણાંથી વંચિત થાય છે. આ સંજોગોમાં જો કોઇક આશા રાખી શકાય તો દેશમાં જ પોતાની જાતને સ્થાપિત કરનાર વૈચારિક રીતે પરીપક્વ બુદ્ધિધનો ઉપર નજર ઠરે! આ વિદ્યાચતુરોએ દેશનું ભવિષ્ય ઘડવાની પ્રક્રિયા જ્યાં થઇ રહી હોય તેવા વર્ગખંડોમાં પોતાનુ કૌશલ્ય બતાવવું જરુરી જ નહીં પણ અનિવાર્ય છે. આવા વર્ગખંડોમાં કદાચ લક્ષ્મીધન ઓછું હોય તો પણ માનધન અને સંતોષના રોટલાની ખોટ નથી.

Why and What is Lohanasonline.com

Recently, we launched a website http://lohanasonline.com called Forum for Lohana Community. Many of the friends ask the aim of the site. Well, here I am briefing how and why the idea of the site came.


Being a teacher I feel off and on that the level of thinking in the youth is far lower than it should be. On many issues, most of the time, they do not have their opinion because they do not know the issues properly. Even if they know the issues, they do not wish to opine.  This is one of the major reasons why many of them lag behind. Besides, our present education system make (or force!!) them to be bookish only. It is more than sufficient for a student set a goal to get distinction -- and the irony is that they get it without knowing their subject. 

I have always wondered why do they not learn "how to learn". In the real life, at each and every stage, we need to learn new things. Not all could be taught in the school/college. Somehow we tend to force student prepare for the exam rather than learning how to learn. 

Even the cream students are unidirectional. Should an IT professional know the basic about History/politics/culture/movie/country...... When I ask my M.Sc. students from Junagadh who Ranakdevi was, I do not get the answer. Many of them are duped by me to believe that in a particular year Diwali would be in the month of Fagan. Many of them have read the novel of Narsinh Mehta!!!

All this have always provoked me to do something to make the youth think, to churn the thoughts in the deep of their brains. But for whom should I do? and how?

The natural choices for me are (1) my students (2) my caste fellows (3) youth of India. 

I chose the first to begin with. Then I extended my thought to the second. For the third there are many to take the leadership, it is better to contribute to support their efforts.  

To attract (drag!!!) lohana youth to discussion and inspiring (or instigating!!) I started with Lohana Community on Orkut. It prospered for some time but then quantity won over the quality (as it happens only in India!!!). So we were toying with the Idea of a forum for discussion (where one can discuss on every legitimate topic), which in turn will make the youth more participative in real issues, real problems and will grow the number of think-banks.  

Hence the present forum.

I hope this throws some light on your query.  If you appreciate the idea behind this, why not to join hands with many others who have already started sharing the their thinking/ideas/information and thereby generating knowledge? I should be glad to see you in action motivating other friends to express themselves on whatever thought they like.

Hindus consider this as a prestigious event. There is no scientific or any other reason for celebrating New year on 1st January, but there are many reasons for doing so on Gudi Padwa.

On this day one can take note of the 'do's' and don'ts' given below -

1. Do not wish a fellow Hindu 'Happy New Year' either on 31st December or 1st January.
2. If a fellow Hindu greets you that way, take time to explain to him how this is wrong and impress upon him that Gudi Padwa is actually our new year.
3. Instead of sending New Year greetings to relatives and friends for 1st January, do it on Gudi Padwa.
4. Ensure that you pass on this valuable information to your near and dear ones, thus preventing them from sinning by celebrating New Year on a day other than our real new year.

5. Remember that ushering in the New Year on Gudi Padwa will help you develop pride in your religion, nation and language.

What an idea Sirji!!!


But one of my friends is Jain, one is Swaminarayan, one is Buddhist,  one is Sikh, I believe in Ramdeoji (Ranuja, Dist Pokhran, Rajasthan), my sister's family believe in Dariya Lal (if you remember the song "Ho Lal Meri Pat Rakhiyo Bhala Zule Lal, Sindhdi Da.... Sufi Saabash Kalandar, Dama dum Mast Kalandar). 

Could you please kindly suggest the new year days for each of them!!!! May I also expect the full list of subdivisions of Hindus!!!!!

I am sure, you are not celebrating the birthday of your brothers as they are not YOUR BIRTHDAY.

I am proud to say that I am Hindu because Hinduism encompasses all the other religions, that is why it is called the Sanatan Dharma too. Let us not be narrow minded and become a frog of a well. 

Let me be clear here that I do not tolerate the dadagiri of Muslims or Christian missionaries. I am against their unholy practices. As and when I get opportunity, I bring out my concern and do condemn their activity. But I will not follow any unholy path. If I do, there is no difference between followers of those religions and me.

I hope an open minded reading of this mail will bring you back to the right path of Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

I am Hindu and I liked most of the arguments made on this site. However, I could not answer the contradictions some people show in the writing. (1) the poster... British Left Bharat in 1947,..(still we are under) their influence, do not celebrate 1st January.... What should be my answer if my friends point out that "British also left English, the language of this site....?" (2) When a person converts.....we too are like converts to Christianity! If my friends parents adopt me, then I will respect them and will join their family celebrations. Does this mean that if I join a certain family in their celebration, I am adopted by the elders of that family?

Could we just assess the steps by ATS Chief!!!!

From the day one, there were various theories/reports about how the three top-level officers were executed. I was anxious to know the reality. Finally I found the story on web told by the nearest eyewitness of the event when ATS Chief Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar succumbed to death. Witness account of Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar's death

A constable, who was in the hijacked Mumbai police vehicle, survived the Wednesday night mayhem to recount the horror of how ATS chief Hemant Karkare and two other top officers of Mumbai police were gunned down inside the Toyota Qualis by a terrorist duo fleeing from CST.

Injured Constable Arun Jadhav was in the vehicle whose tyre burst when the desperadoes had commandeered it in their attempt to flee from police chase.

Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte, who were all travelling in the same vehicle, were shot dead along with three constables by the terrorists.

The top officers were on way to Cama Hospital, just a 10-minute drive from CST station, to check on another injured officer Sadanand Date. [My views: Can any defence agency approve this action as a wise action!!! The answer is NO. Then what made these three top ranked officials to rush in this way ?]


"When we were informed that Sadanand Date has been injured at the firing in Cama Hospital Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and four constables left from CST to the spot.

"Five minutes later, two persons carrying AK-47 rifles emerged from behind a tree and started firing at out vehicle," said Jadhav, who was hit by two bullets in his right arm and is recuperating in the Bombay Hospital.



Sitting on his bed on the 14th floor of the hospital, Jadhav, who has been in the police service for the past 12 years, said the exact number of shots fired at the police car was not known, but the three top officers and as many constables were killed on the spot. Jadhav was the only person in the vehicle who survived.

"I have been working with Salaskar my entire police career but I could not do anything to save his life," he said with tears rolling down his eyes.

While Salaskar was at the wheel, Kamte was in the front seat and Karkare in the second row with the four Constables, including Jadhav, at the back seat.

"The two terrorists then came up to our vehicle and pulled out Karkare, Kamte and Salaskar's bodies out and threw them on the road. Thinking that we (Constables) are also dead, the terrorists then got into the car and started driving towards Metro junction," Jadhav said.

They fired three rounds at journalists and police vans standing at Metro junction and then sped away towards Vidhan Bhawan in south Mumbai, where again they fired some rounds.

"The terrorists then started driving from Vidhan Bhawan when the car's tyre burst. They then got off the car and ran towards another vehicle," he said.


Jadhav then got in touch with the police control and informed them about the death of Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and the three Constables.

"Additional Commissioner of Police (ATS) Parambir Singh and other police officers then rushed to the spot and took the bodies to St George hospital," Jadhav said.
